Seriously though your right the state of gaming on Linux blows
compared to Windows, I think this is going to change over the next
few years as different initiatives take off. By the way have you
tried X Beyond the Frontier 2 or X3 which have Linux versions. The
main problem is that the OpenGL performance and drivers are way
off their Windows equivalents in terms of performance. The gap is
reducing fast but until the experience can be equal Games
companies won't develop for it, and they define the industry at
present.
Some games companies though who require an online experience
though are using Linux and OSS to drive this. See Second Life. Tribes.
I have been promising George EACOSS for a long time (sorry) that
we should put together some lug ideas and showcase them in real
life. I think we as the lug are need to put stuff together meet,
chat swap idea's and really generate a groundswell of interest.
Effende's serve a mean metzi plate and have a projector? We have
Ubuntu HH due in 6 days!
Anyway a oft quoted idea?

I also agree with that point. Youngsters can be introduced to
linux because
you can accomplish most daily tasks on desktop linux. You don't need
expensive hardware since linux will run on your toaster if you put
in some
work. Also you can get together and translate linux to all the various
languages spoken in Africa. I think Windows only has Kiswahili as
a option.
I don't want to preach the same points that most of you probably
already
know.
I have been using desktop linux as my regular home computer and as my
workstation at my job, and i have almost got to the point where i
don't need
a windows computer anymore. I only have one to play games on.

Console games are great in their own respect. But i find PC games
are a
richer experience. The mods and community for PC games are what
keeps me
coming back. And users still play old PC games, once a console falls a
generation behind good luck finding games for it. I look at OSS
projects
like Open Transport Tycoon as a way to get younger kids into
Linux. Once
they figure out that they can create their own content and share
it amongst
their peers. But their need to be more OSS games for this to
happen. I feel
an OSS football game would be the best ice breaker. It would
definitely hold
children's interest.

Sometimes this forum makes me wonder. Its seems like I pissed of a
moderator or something so my posts need to be attacked. Anyways I
have a
troll hat somewhere I haven't used in a while so here goes.

what is strange about the uses I have for my Linux servers?
I really don't have any uses for my Linux laptop. All the software
I use
at home cant run on Linux so I have an IMac. I guess I "get along
without MS too!"
As far as games go, not everything is released on consoles. I do
have an
xbox 360 (that I play to death), but last time I check there was no
world of warcraft or homeworld 2, so when im sitting in heathrow
airport
waiting 10 hours for my connecting flight to kampala, I might want to
play a few games on my laptop .... but ohh wait I cant coz its Ubuntu
... I guess I can try and deploy apache with php a few times and
hopefully time will fly by.
So this thread was about getting people into the Linux fold. I
posted my
experiences, and it seems that my experiences are now the subject
of the
thread. Ive tried to get back to the original topic, and ignored the
other useless responses, but to no avail.
