Speaking of OSX though, there is another interesting recent
announcement: OSX Snow Leopard (here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/snowleopard/

Looks boring until you pay close attention:
- Looks like 32bit computing will be taken out back and given a Soviet
farewell. About time too. We are not only running out of (32-bit) IP
address space with IPv4, we are also fast running out of integer space
for other computing purposes. To take one example, once upon a time it
was reasonable to use ordinary 32-bit integers as identifier fields in
a database table. With the volumes of transactions we see these days,
this is just not an option. Here's another example: The most RAM you
can put in that new PC or laptop is 4GB, not because you can't have
more, but because your OS will not handle more than that. And yet
today that 4GB is rather reasonably priced.
- Improved multi-core 'awareness' is more than welcome. Multi-core
is here to stay. Yet software is still being developed largely as if
there is only one processor in the box.
- Exposing more of the GPU to the developer in a clean way: Good-
bye console, hello whiz-bang GUI. Again software platforms are lagging
far behind in this space.
What's the point? Well, it would be nice to see more focus from the
Linux community on the *future* and not the past. Apple has shown one
way to do it, which is to drag everybody, kicking and screaming, into
whatever brave new future awaits. They did it when they dumped OS 9,
and again when they dumped PowerPC for Intel, they seem to want to do
it again.
