Noah,
I used to like you until that posting

Now because of all the NUGU I have, I believe I hate you!

How could you be playing with that much RAM when some of us have never even seen 8 GB on a server :-)

You are Fake and Hopeless and are Worthless to society as a whole!

My oracle database server has 48GB of RAM and 46GB of that is in use. At my previous work place, the billing system was a two node cluster and EACH of the cluster nodes had 96GB of RAM which is all in use. Infact I am currently having problems with not enough RAm and have to [plan an upgrade to 96Gb on my current server.

Solaris handles these amounts of RAm with no problem at all and I expect that FreeBSD, and other forms of nix handle it without much trouble.

Noah.

Speaking of 64GB of RAM, what would you need all that RAM for? gene calculations, 10,000 years plus weather simulations or ...(add what ever complex thing computers do)? The nearest I have seen to that much RAM on a single machine is 4GB which was only registered as 3.7GB on a winxp desktop, i bet *Nix wouldn't do any better either.

I'm using it now and I love it. Was unhappy that they've simplified stuff a bit so it scarily resembles GNOME in some aspects, but for now the pretty factor that the integrated desktop effects compiz (which finally just works (TM)) has distracted me enough to stay with it.

Off-the-bat, the install is great! I can't recall what life
was like back in '99 when ksemat handed me my first SuSE

Linux Professional CD set (well, not mine really, but you
get the picture).

They have shortened the install process much; the KDE
installation is some kind of compressed image - I didn't
get into the details. The reduced install time is very

welcome, especially on slower machines.

The kernel now has PAE (Physical Address Extension) support.
You may recall Paul Bagyenda's address expansion wish-list
earlier. Basically, the kernel can support up to 64GB of

RAM on a 32-bit system by increasing the address size to 36
bits, while retaining compatibility with 32-bit
applications.

Now, I'm not a programmer, and don't know my $'s from my #'s
or couldn't write code to save my life... so whether this

is all bull or not, I can't really say - as long as my 2GB
can be addressed, it's all good :-).

Avoid KDE-4, it looks pretty but it doesn't work - in short.
I work heavily under Linux, and KDE-4 just isn't there. A

lot of stuff is broken, and it doesn't play nice with my
VMware Fusion (resolution and all that). However, rumour
has it KDE-4.1 is far better, and most folk plan to upgrade
once it goes stable. Personally, I'll stick with KDE-3.5.9;

besides, openSuSE do warn you that's it not stable, before
you install.

A few annoying bugs still exist under KMail in KDE-3.5.9, so
the old workarounds still apply (although they seemed to be
clear in KDE-4).

The system boots faster, integrates better with VMware
(under KDE-3.5.9) and seems solid.

Another happy camper.

Cheers,

Mark.

Unfortunately, this goes against my personal policy of
running stable code. Yes, I did think about it, but I don't
want to do my work on an experimental platform just
yet :-).

And I doubt openSuSE will have it for the current release.
Knowing them, they will more likely integrate it into
openSuSE-11.1, or whatever version number they choose next.

Cheers,

Windows.com. If you still use it, you should feel gratified. You are
not alone.
