Well marketed definitely, but also thoroughly underwhelming! Tried it, and got a whole host of irrelevant results to some search I can't even recall now. Then I began to wonder: Why is search proving so hard for everybody but Google?

Then I found this piece from the guys who like to "bite the hand the feeds IT": http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/31/google_cuil_spammers_analysis/ -- some good arguments there... But it may only make sense if you have grown up enough to no longer be fascinated by "Web 2.0" boxes with rounded corners :)

Cuil.com is not really a part of google. The lady who developed the google engine a few years back has left the company and with her husband they are trying to create their own search engine

Well, maybe or maybe not. i've been using the "other google" for some time now (http://searchmash.com). It kind of doesn't make sense ifcuil.com was part of google yet it isn't up to google standards. searchmash.com on the other hand is google but for some reason isn't marketed .... BUT then we wouldn't know what the big boys are up to, though the truth
does come out eventually.
