The stiff upper lip if I ever saw one.

I'm not a 'black power' person myself, but I have to say I'm elated. Not since Mandela danced that little jig at his swearing-in in '94 have I been this pleased by any political process. Why? Because as you say, it is a great story to inspire the kids (and, in my case, an example to give to the students, who don't read nearly as much). If this win is anything it is what one might call an Ode to Discipline. Just as Mandela's was an Ode to Sacrifice. (If I had been born at the time, Ghandi would be on this list.)

I spent four years at school with the "best and brightest" America has to offer, but, to paraphrase Michelle Obama somewhat, today americans have for the first time to my mind shown my generation why they deserve our respect and admiration. They have said "enough!" to scare-mongering and to the elevation form (Palin) over substance (Obama). Yes, I know the superlatives are all over the page, but this is great. Greater than nuclear weapons, greater than US$1 million-a- day aircraft carriers, greater than the Big Mac. Or at least more beautiful.

I have no illusions that he will solve all America's problems, let alone ours. The win alone makes the world a little bit more of "a better place". And that's enough for me, for now.

 P.

Ps. On a lighter note, there is one member of this list who at one point during the campaign made some disparaging remarks about Ms. Palin. I had feared at the time that he would, post 4th November, find himself a guest of the Coalition of The Bribed and Coerced at a certain beach establishment in Cuba, sharing a room with a Moussaui and an Al-Malik. For his sake I'm glad things turned out differently!

Honestly I personally have no interest in whatever the Americans decide and who ever leads them, but I am happy that the page has been turned during my generation, its more kabozi for me to give my children, but that's about it.

I really don't see the cause for all the excitement. I can understand
why African-Americans are excited, it's the first time the US has
picked a president from a minority (can't remember the exact
percentage but its around 20%)

For Africa, it probably bears not real significance. Obama is
American, his priority is America. I believe his dad (the Kenyan)
abandoned his family and Obama has only visited Kenya a few times.

Would we be this excited if it had been Hillary Clinton, an election
which would have been just as historic?

PS: I was routing for Obama, mostly because what he said made sense,
not because he is black (ahem, African-American)
