Dear Richard,

Would greatly help if you could tell us the distribution and version of Linux you are currently using. Plus the type PCMCIA or UCB Modem you refer to. Under ubuntu 8.04 and higher the Duxbury USB Modem is automatically detected.

Try entering

sudo dmesg | grep tty

into a console, and post the results.
