A simple answer is NO. I have Samba installed on my UNIX OS on my laptop and
with no configuration, I am able to access my Windows shares and even
computers on the domain. Of course I need to thrown in my domain\username
with my domain password to access them, but even this can be taken care of.
You could use KWallet to store your passwords for you so that you do not
need to enter it everytime you want to access a share, or, you could go to
"Control Center > Internet and Network > Local Network Browsing" and on the
right hand pane, you will see entries for the default username and password
to use while accessing Windows shares. Enter your name here, without domain/
or @domain.

I rolled back to KDE3 since KDE4 could not work with some applications I
really need to use... someone with KDE4 can point you to the right place
where this is in Control Center.

Of course, you might discount this possibility, but remember that one in
a million chances happen 99% of the time.
