I would like to install this device so that i can reinstall my fedora oin my 
note book which has only usb port.
Could there be an option of creating a bootable flash disk?

is the drive empty when you try to mount it? that would explain the "device is 
not a block device".

try this, plug in your drive, insert a disk and tell us what happens

Dennis,

Recompiling the kernel is usually not necessary. Just plug in your USB CDROM.

You can take a look at the output of the lsusb and dmesg commands,
they will confirm whether or not your drive is installed.
