Dear All,
Apologies for this mass email circulation but I have been very impressed by
what I have seen and read about the Uganda Linux Users Group.
My name is Miriam Mukasa and I am based in the UK where I am currently
researching the ICT sector in Africa, with a view to setting up a start-up with
my two colleagues, both of whom, like me, strongly believe that the technology
revolution could be the way forward for Africa (namely, East Africa). We also
believe that like India, Africa too is capable of moving from an agricultural
to a knowledge based economy.
With Kenya now one of the leading players in the African technology revolution
(MPESA etc), I don’t doubt that with bright people like yourselves, Uganda
cannot be far behind and to this end, I was wondering whether my colleagues and
I could get your thoughts on the future of ICTs in East Africa.
I came across the details of your organisation in the course of my research and
I very much enjoyed watching the TEDx Kampala video. Furthermore, while the
news about the submarine fiber optic cables (Seacom etc) is exciting,  I
believe its impact will be limited unless (internet) accessibility is improved
and to this end, we are looking to produce a mobile IAD (similar to a net book)
but one specifically made for users in Africa (including those who cannot read
or write). We will also be looking to utilise local web content.
I appreciate mobile phones are all the rage in Africa i.e. SMS, mobile banking
etc but I believe there is also room for another form of IAD too. Indeed, one
of my colleagues will be in Uganda in mid-December 2009 (for research purposes)
and he is planning on setting aside one afternoon to meet with as many of you
as possible over coffee or lunch in Kampala to get your honest thoughts re. our
ideas. I would therefore be most grateful if you could spare us some time in
mid December 2009.
Please can you kindly come back to me to confirm your availability or indeed
your interest in assisting us. It would also be helpful for me to know, what
exactly your current IT experience is.
I very much look forward to hearing from you all soon. Feel free to forward
this email to anyone who you think might be of interest to us.
With kindest regards,
