Although they aren't necessarily one & the same thing, they 
do have the potential to compliment each other.

That said, it is possible to implement an open standard 
using closed source. We see it all the time, today.

Not sure what's really new here. The Internet is a good 
example of the successes and/or failures of either approach, 
as well as their alternatives, if any.
