There are different configurations and hence recommendations depending on your (server) hardware, the type of termination (E1/analogue/GSM), application (voice/video/fax/sms) and price range.

You could go for Digium cards since * is maintained by Digium.

Another approach is to go for a media gateway rather then making your life difficult with hardware compatibility, driver (module compilation) and configuration issues. Another advantage is, you can run the asterisk server as a virtual machine.
