Hi Sam,

The way I do it, is that I decide on where I will be mapping, then I go to

www.walking-papers.org

and I create a fineline map (in the dropdown) of that area.

Then I go out and map dots and names of streets, and sometimes extra streets 
on that piece of paper.

Then I go home and add that information to openstreetmap using the online 
editor.

There are lots of other ways, but this one work very well without a GPS 
device.
