Dear All, Sorry for cross posting
For those of you not on DataNet here is why u have been suffering the last few weeks Stephen ==== Dear Esteemed Clients, I had promised an update regarding the fibre cable and the recent outages. Before discussing the way forward I would like to give some small background to the issues we are facing with SEACOM. SEACOM, the undersea cable is sound. Very little downtime and very good quality. The issue is with the cable that runs from Mombasa. There are three sections that we have to consider, Leg 1 - Mombasa to Nairobi Leg 2 - Nairobi to Uganda Border Leg 3 - Uganda border to Kampala Until Wednesday this week, neither of these legs had a reliable backup and hence either one being down has been causing these regular outages. I would say statistically speaking over the last 6-month period, I estimate that downtimes were experienced because of the individual leg failures as below: Leg 1 - 60% Leg 2 - 40% Leg 3 - Insignificant Not having a backup to leg 3 is acceptable due to the reliability so far experienced. In Fact, both TEAMS and SEACOM share this infrastructure and this leg being down would cause the failure of both cables. Leg 2 has recently (Wednesday) been backed up. There are now 2 cables from Nairobi to the Uganda border. We had a downtime on Thursday on this leg, but the outage was only 5 minutes as the traffic was routed to the other route. It was good to finally see that working. Leg 1 still remains without back up and the outage Friday evening was caused by failure on this leg. This being the leg causing the most outages remains a very big concern for Datanet and our clients. I am happy to report that Datanet is on the final stages of negotiation to have the TEAMS cable installed and estimates that it could be as soon as the end of the month. Whilst certain infrastructure is shared with SEACOM, more importantly it will run a different route on Leg 1. I know it has been a long time coming, but Datanet will be one of the first few to run commercial services of a combination of both cables and with the combination we will be able to go back to the service levels that you both expect and deserve. I thank you very much for your patience Best Regards Rupin Masrani Managing Director Datanet _______________________________________________ LUG mailing list [email protected] http://kym.net/mailman/listinfo/lug LUG is generously hosted by INFOCOM http://www.infocom.co.ug/ All Archives can be found at http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ The above comments and data are owned by whoever posted them (including attachments if any).
