From what I understand they used the current iPhone as a trial to
determine what tasks the popular apps continue to use and then created
special programming APIs that developers can use to call these task.
The iPhone will determine what tasks need to run and at what time. It
is a shame that I have to upgrade to a new device since multiple
tasking is not avaliable on the 3G. Damn apple, they make me feel like
a beta tester sometimes.
