Hi,

No need for stuff in your /opt folder, unless there are no packages for your
app.

Here is what we install by default on our development machines that run
Kubuntu:

sudo apt-get install wget traceroute mtr locate virtualbox-ose-qt inkscape
kaffeine icedtea6-plugin fuse-utils flashplugin-installer openssh-server
quassel
smb4k virtualbox-ose apache2 mysql-server php5 php5-cli php5-mysql phpmyadmin
klinkstatus kcolorchooser gimp kruler ttf-mscorefonts-installer sshfs php5-dev
php-pear apache2-threaded-dev

This will turn your machine into a LAMPP server:

sudo apt-get install apache2 mysql-server php5 php5-cli php5-mysql phpmyadmin
php5-dev php-pear apache2-threaded-dev

Because Drupal (our CMS of choice) is such a hog, we speed up php a bit:

 sudo pecl install apc
 echo "extension=apc.so" > sudo /etc/php5/apache2/conf.d/apc.ini

No need for more complexity. And if you cache this in your office, or at least
use our cache in town, you should be installing this pretty fast.
