Andrew, Are we talking about a custom lamp or the native one? I know that from your EACOSS/ORDINA days, you had a separate LAMPP build that you installed into the SuSE 10. I suggest you try apt-get -y install mysql apache2 blah blah first. It will work well for you.
Perhaps you want to use a step-by-step howto fron HowtoForge, then go to; http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-ubuntu-10.04-lucid-lynx-ispconfig-2 Let me know if it does not work for you.
