Andrew,

Are we talking about a custom lamp or the native one? I know that from
your EACOSS/ORDINA days, you had a separate LAMPP build that you
installed into the SuSE 10. I suggest you try apt-get -y install mysql
apache2 blah blah first. It will work well for you. 

Perhaps you want to use a step-by-step howto fron HowtoForge, then go
to;
