Hi,

Lately we are doing quite a bit of mapping. It's a hip field of work at the
moment, and we having a lot of fun doing it. We shared some of the fun on the
last LUG meeting when we showed how we can build pothole.ug in 20 minutes.

When building geo-aware applications there is 2 ways to find out where someone
is. First is to use a GPS, for which phones or other devices need to have
extra hardware onboard, or to use people's IP address.

Just curious, but are there any people in Uganda that can do the following
test (using firefox) and see if their location is in any way accurate:
http://davidwalsh.name/dw-content/geolocation.php

I end up on Mackay Rd, which is in Kampala (that is good) but its closer to my
ISP, than it is to where I really am.

Being able to use this kind of technology is not just hip, or great fun, but
also allows for example to run reports of your website, based on location (how
many people from the west/east/central visit my website. Or offer
services/redirects based on where people are (like advertisements).

(ah, hip is hip as in for example http://foursquare.com/ which is a game where
you can 'claim' a certain real-life location as your own, if you visit it
often enough and 'checkin' from it. It works worldwide, there are some people
playing it in Kampala too)

(And if you want to know how the page in firefox works, its explained here:
http://davidwalsh.name/geolocation-api )
