The Skype application on my friends new Verizon Droid is a special version which forces him to use cell-phone air-time/minutes, rather than his data plan, to place calls. Other stuff is locked down as well unless you "root" the phone.

The US cell-phone market is a horrible mess. 1GB of pay-as-you-go 3G data (couldn't believe it was even available to begin with) on AT&T is $50 or 100,000/=.

The only fix, as far as I can see it, would be to break Verizon and AT&T up into about 4-6 different companies -- and to forcefully separate retail phone sales from the service providers.
