Hi Steen,
Until yesterday I was running an (unofficial) copy of Windows 7 on my old desktop pc. It worked fine - good speed etc. -. the desktop has 1 Mb Ram and the processor is 4-5 years old!! >The yesterday I took a deep breath and installed Ubuntu. >First of all the installation took for ever - 4-5 hours - and did never reach >more that 95% This might have been due to it trying to download updates. Did the machine have an Internet connection? I find it's better to install Ubuntu offline, then update after. > 1. Ubuntu runs slow on this PC. As I am writing this, the keyboard strokes > are delayed several seconds as if the cache cannot follow my speed of > > typing - and I am a slow typist!! This does not sound normal especially with 1Gb of RAM. You need to check the processor list and see what is using 80-100% of your CPU. System--->Administration------->System Monitor. > 2. Ubuntu does not recognize my PS/2 mouse, so I have had to dig out > another USB mouse - ok now Also odd, is your PC a whitebox? Or a brandname like a DELL, HP etc. > 3. My scanner is not supported for Linux (it is a CanoScan Lide 200) - > which is not coursed by Ubuntu - but by Canon! But is it possible to get a > >generic driver for the scanner?? https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/printing/C/scanning.html Try following this Wiki. Otherwise it does appear your scanner is supported in the latest version of SANE but requires you to compile the source code. http://www.sane.org > 4. I have an Iomega Home Network Harddisk which I could access via the > Explorer in Windows, but it does not show in "Places" under Ubuntu - how can > I >get access?? Do I need to set up a share for the drives on the harddisk?? Can you try plugging the drive in then goto Applications---->Accessories---->Terminal and type sudo dmesg at the terminal. Finally I would like to remove the Ubuntu I have installed on my laptop side by side with Windows 7 (this is a legitimate copy) Help for any of the above subject will be most appreciated :-)) Steen _______________________________________________ LUG mailing list [email protected] http://kym.net/mailman/listinfo/lug LUG is generously hosted by INFOCOM http://www.infocom.co.ug/ All Archives can be found at http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ The above comments and data are owned by whoever posted them (including attachments if any).
