Hi,

I am quite sure the trick is in this package:

sudo apt-get install usb-modeswitch

(k)ubuntu has difficulties with the huawei modems being a disk (which it
doesnt use anyways) *and* a modem. Sometimes it will find the disk first, and
forget about the modem.

this packages solves that and make sure ubuntu will always find the modem.
