Hello Francis, Thanks for the link and reply, however even after running samba as a less privileged user as the article suggests it still cant start service nmb. the permission error is still there even when samba is run by root.
Forcing a restart hangs the operating system. Below is the part of the boot log: Oct 15 16:57:21 file-server nmbd[4313]: started asyncdns process 4314 Oct 15 16:57:21 file-server nmbd[4313]: [2010/10/15 16:57:21, 0] /usr/src/packages/BUILD/samba- 3.0.28/source/lib/pidfile.c:pidfile_create(119) Oct 15 16:57:21 file-server nmbd[4313]: ERROR: can't open /var/run/samba/nmbd.pid: Error was Permission denied Oct 15 17:07:36 file-server dhcpd: DHCPINFORM from 192.168.1.226 via eth0: not authoritative for subnet 192.168.1.0 Oct 15 17:07:36 file-server dhcpd: If this DHCP server is authoritative for that subnet, Oct 15 17:07:36 file-server dhcpd: please write an `authoritative;' directive either in the Oct 15 17:07:36 file-server dhcpd: subnet declaration or in some scope that encloses the Oct 15 17:07:36 file-server dhcpd: subnet declaration - for example, write it at the top Oct 15 17:07:36 file-server dhcpd: of the dhcpd.conf file.
