I was going to suggest installing Chrome, but apparently the linux versions
of Chrome (at least the newer ones) do not support
Gears<http://www.toptechreviews.net/tech-news/google-gears-death-announced/>

If offline Gmail is important to you, your alternatives pretty much seem to
be:-

a) Forget about Gears and use IMAP to sync your mail using a mail client
b) Wait for when Google is done working "with our friends at Mozilla and
Microsoft<http://news.idg.no/cw/art.cfm?id=5AD52BBA-1A64-67EA-E4722E498F30F8C5>".
This may take a while (end of year!)
c) Downgrade firefox
