What do you mean "play nice"? My laptop uses a BCM57780 (which uses the tg3 module) and I found that it wouldn't work unless I loaded the broadcom module first.
So I put this in /etc/modprobe.d/99-local.conf: install tg3 /sbin/modprobe broadcom; sleep 1; /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install tg3 Works like a charm.
