As somebody wrote, beware any programming text that is significantly fatter than the K&R book. Concision is a word that keeps being used to describe the man. There was also his work on Plan 9, which was supposed to be a UNIX successor. It never got widely adopted, for all sorts of reasons, but the ideas therein live on even in Linux (file-centric rather than API-centric access to I/O, UTF-8). P.
