Okay. The problem you have run into has to do with the modem identifying itself as a USB mass storage device, probably to provide drivers for Windows computers. This may be fixed using something called usb_modeswitch. This involves installing a few packages by hand and changing a number of settings. And possibly a bit of trial and error.
If you feel uncomfortable doing this on your own, I would suggest that you bring your computer (laptop?) and modem to your local LUG chapter, and they will be glad to help you.
