Okay. The problem you have run into has to do with the modem identifying
itself as a USB mass storage device, probably to provide drivers for
Windows computers. This may be fixed using something called usb_modeswitch.
This involves installing a few packages by hand and changing a number of
settings. And possibly a bit of trial and error.

If you feel uncomfortable doing this on your own, I would suggest that you
bring your computer (laptop?) and modem to your local LUG chapter, and they
will be glad to help you. The following links should put them on the right

If you feel that you are comfortable enough in the Linux environment to
proceed with only e-mail assistance, tell me and we may proceed. I would
