For backup purposes, rsync is definitely a better choice, especially if the Internet connection is dodgy since rsync verifies that all the files were transferred intact. If privacy is an issue (if you are dealing with other users' data, it is very much so) you could run rsync over SSH by appending "-e ssh" to the rsync command.
