The adapter is supposed to power a sort of inverter circuit in your laptop and NOT the battery DIRECTLY so your supplier is speaking hogwash. HOWEVER, if your adapter kills both the inverter and battery then it needs to be replced. Sometimes bad charge can kill the battery especially if it is deceptively weak. A charge not low enough to charge the battery and yet
high enough to keep your internal inverter running on power can cause your laptop to slowly drain the battery while giving you the impression that you are running on power. Please revisit the reason your battery died in the first place just to be sure. I am running a dell studio 173 for the past 5yrs and while I have changed the battery JUST ONCE, I have never had cause to change adapters. However after replacement it is fine now. There's no error message displayed that's why i think he just wants to get money.
