On the upside, you get a free crash-course in GNU/Linux internals while installing Gentoo. Which ought to be a good thing for a developer, eh? :) Up to recently, I would have recommended Arch Linux. But as of late, every Arch system I have tried to install have died of various odd reasons, probably due to a botched upgrade of one of the core packages in Arch. You may have better luck than I had. For such a low-end system, I would choose a reasonably barebones system (Slackware, Gentoo, Arch, even Debian I suppose) and for the graphicalities install something lightweight such as Openbox, Fluxbox, JWM, IceWM... Back in the days, when I grew old enough to start wanting to try non-default things, I started out with testing Blackbox and later Fluxbox, and I was very satisfied. Even today I use Openbox whenever I have a low-end box which absolutely must have a graphical environment for some reason.
