There are a lot of discussions on Phoronix, Slashdot and other places about Opensource and closed source graphics driver issues and these eventually touch gaming and with talk of DRMs, lawyers and such Carmack might be right. I doubt anyone(Nvidia & AMD-ATI) wants to open up as much as Intel does with its graphics chip-sets, at least not anytime soon.
