Hi, Luggers!

At the January LUG meeting, I volunteered the S7 Project to host the
February LUG meeting. This meeting will take place at S7 (in
Namuwongo) on Friday Feb 22, at 4 pm.

To my eyes, our LUG has actually been acting as more of an LPG (Linux
Professional Group) as opposed to a Linux User Group. The purpose of
the Feb 22 meeting will be to discuss how the LUG might sweep more
users into the day-to-day Linux fold.

S7 offers a two-year Linux-based computer studies curriculum (among
other curricula). We also host Jet Internet Cafe, an Ubuntu Internet
cafe. Both Jet and S7 are interested in getting more people to USE
Linux as their day-to-day computing environment. We also host COSS.UG,
which has similar interests.

We'd like to open Jet and S7 up to the Kampala Linux community to
discuss ways in which we might get more people to use Linux. Some of
the things we've been thinking of offering at Jet include:

* Ubuntu conversions: bring us your Windows machine and we'll back up
your data and convert your machine to Ubuntu.

* Ubuntu lessons: this is an obvious choice for us, though in our experience
it may not be as necessary as you'd first think. New customers at Jet sit
right down at our Ubuntu boxes and use them without having to ask
any questions. Once someone knows Windows, learning Ubuntu is trivial.

* Ubuntu technical support: this would be free along with a paid conversion,
and would be a paid service afterward.

We'd like to show off S7 and Jet at the Feb 22 meeting, and welcome
your ideas on how they might be
opened up further to the Linux community.

Thank you,

Robert Orenstein
