The preferred (and nowadays prevalent) method of defining partitions in /etc/fstab is by the UUID of the partition. You can resize it and move it around however you like and it should still work. You could even put the drive in a USB cradle and boot the system from USB! (Or rather, the boot sequence won't fail at the drive enumeration. There are still a lot of things which can go wrong, but my Ubuntu install handled the new situation nicely without any modifications to that end.)
