The quietest people have the loudest minds. The idea of extroverts getting charged by social interaction and introverts getting drained by the same has been around for a long time, and I think it is the prevailing view on the matter. At practically every social function I've attended (here in Sweden, that is) there has been at least one more-or-less defined zone for introverts to recharge, usually the balcony or the library room, where intrusive social interaction would be inappropriate.
There are some interesting implications. If introverts are drained and extroverts are charged, would that make the introverts the power source of social interaction? Thus drained, do they effectively recharge with introspective thought? Indeed, I have rarely witnessed any meaningful conversation which haven't involved at least one introvert. A group with only extroverts tend to speak volumes about inane things, colloquially known as "small-talk"; a group with only introverts, on the other hand, would rarely speak at all, and then almost only of things of meaning. Both groups tend to be perfectly content with this, by the way, but I believe both types are needed in a group to produce wholesome interaction, since they complement each other. Extroverts tend to lure introverts into talking more, and introverts tend to lure extroverts into talking about more meaningful things. Both amount to the same thing, namely a fluent, productive dialogue. (Of course, it's seldom as simple as that: Although they only identify with one of the extremes, most people are somewhere in between. I identify with introverts, but I know at least a handful of people who are more so than I am.) On 4 Apr 2013 08:49, "Stephen S.
