The people who created this software had a way they built this thing in order to take over the device instance that is quite well unexplained but, yes it out runs network manager, the one for MTN is worse i suppose, it not only is dangerous to install but, it in my case crippled USB detection for devices in my laptop, i was running OpenSUSE 12.2 . I tried everything and it failed, this was worse since even connecting to BeagleBone boards stopped working. Yes, i suggest you never install that crap heap of software but, if you are looking for a that is not buggy and allows you to use USSD services, modem manager has a GUI that you can build from source, it is not really a program of its own but, it is just an interface to the linux internal modem-manager
try it by writing $ modem-manger in your console then to run the gui for modem manager , you have to be root, [This sucks], which i why i feel this is a weak point. This is because this particular one actually works hand in hand with the Network manager and hence gives me the bad feeling that since this stuff has to be run in this mode, i suspect that even Linux is attack-able since this all runs in root. here is a link to the gui source code for the modem-manager ui, it is just a few KBs http://linuxonly.ru/cms/page.php?7 Well, i guess there is a lot to discover as far as linux security is concerned and a lot to experiment, anyone will to figure out if using SMS or rather USSD can trigger a payload to start attacking ?
