Your security is improved when you move to cyanogenmod
 because it is (more)
opensource and to quote Eric Raymond, "with many eyes all
 bugs are shallow".
Meaning that with more people looking at the code, there is
 better quality
 and thus increased security.
Moving to Cyanogenmod puts you back in control of your
 device (unless you
are Xperia Arc S then you are screwed at CM 10.). The whole
 idea behind
modding and roms is to bring the fun of Linux to the world
 of android.
Take a look at MIUI (http://en.miui.com/ My iPhone User
 Interface) by the
 Chinese.

I vaguely recall the issue of roms like Cynagenmod being more secure was
because they lacked addons from carriers and the likes of Samsung, ZTE etc.
There was an article in 'El reg'(http://www.theregister.co.uk/) a while back on
this. Besides the last I checked there was talk of adding SELinux to the system.

Joachim
