Kyle, I haven't inspected Coursera's Python classes, but I've been taking other Coursera online classes, and I'm very impressed by their quality.
As for a good IDE: I like Geany. Not exactly an IDE - more of a sophisticated code editor - but it's good enough for me and I'm writing production-quality code. If your friend wants any help or advice with Python, I'd be happy to talk to her. Python is my primary area of expertise. Also if I talk to her and can get an idea of what she wants to do with it in the future, I might be able to make more specific recommendations.
