Could you attach it the Hard Disk to a Linux System (maybe also a live system like Knoppix if you don’t have one installed) and after attaching send us the ~last 200 lines of syslog?
tail –n 200 –f /var/log/syslog and also the output of lsusb So we can see if only the filesystem is broken or also the hardware.
