They see something good in the project, want to make it better, so they
buy it up. If they leave the project to do what it wants and just give
it funding to realize its goals and share some of the tech. back with
them, that's alright. If it doesn't, it could go any number of ways.

The truth of the matter right now is that the Internet is being ran by
Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, Google and Apple. The level of significance
these companies are having in the open source and open networking world
is growing stronger each day. What that means for independence from
money is anyone's guess. Should we be scared... hell yes. The best we
can do is keep the independence alive even though it gets gobbled up
each year by the 5 horsemen.
