You can do "umount -f" on the client, but otherwise there is no way to do this currently. To the client it is no different than if the MDS/OSS crashed, and it will wait for them to restart. In fact some customers stop the MDS/OSS, update Lustre, and then restart it without even stopping the applications running on the clients. Then, they can schedule a job on each of the nodes to upgrade Lustre on the client the next time it is available (i.e. no job is running).
