We use LVM snapshots but not on a production filesystem. It slows things down 
too much (kcopyd). Instead we mirror the production filesystem to the backup 
filesystem every night and perform snapshots on that. A modern kernel/distro 
(e.g. RHEL5) is required for stable snapshots. As Andreas said you can then use 
"tunefs.lustre --reformat --writeconf --fsname=NEWNAME" to rename the 
filesystems and mount them on the MDS and OSSs. Clients can then mount the 
snapshot filesystems.
