This "ratio" is only an artifact of your observation and is not going to
persist for the life of the filesystem.
In Lustre 2.1 this behavior of returning min(inodes, blocks) on the MDT has
been removed. The mkfs.lustre inode ratio calculation has been improved, and
the statfs code no longer needs to overcompensate for the danger of external
xattr blocks. If you run out of blocks on the MDT this will still show up in
normal "lfs df" output, separate from the "lfs df -i" output.
In the meantime, you can check the total number of inodes created on the MDT
filesystem at format time with:
dumpe2fs -h {dev} | grep "Inode count"
There is a patch for 1.8 to change this as well, but it didn't make it into
1.8.6.
