This is still not recommended, but I doubt anybody made any serious tests with
e.g. 2.x codebase.
I suspect as long as you don't use mmap all should be fine in both 1.8 an 2.x

Yes this should work, but posix locking does not work properly in 1.8 in that
case.
It does work with 2.1 clients.
