In General, running mixed version client / server is NOT recommended. 
I've personally run into problems with 1.8.4 clients running against 
newer 1.8.8 servers. These problems are NOT server related but client 
related and due cause some issues. However, if your clients are stable 
now, likely you're not going to run into it.

Unfortunately without testing you'll never know what the end result 
might be. I recommend you upgrade across the board as client upgrade 
should not require a reboot. You can also follow the wiki.lustre.org 
procedure on rolling updates which may also help you avoid downtime.
