I can come up with some unlikely ideas, but it would depend on how your system 
is set up.

The simplest check would be to mount the suspect device as ldiskfs and take a 
look at what the directory structure inside looks like (does it have file names 
like a regular FS (MDT), or a bunch of numbered/lettered directories (OST))

If your server is running both an MDT and an OST, use scsi_id to make sure that 
the devices you think are MDTs and OSTs aren't actually the same device.

Not sure how this is even possible, but our MDT is showing up as an OST when I 
do 'tunef2.lustre'

Is there a way to change the flags for a disk so it will see it as an MDT again?
