Dear David, as usual your knowledge in this field is really enlighteninga| In fact the Jean Desmoulins lute having been so heavily modified, it would carry very limited informations about the French lute building in the XVII century.
I've always been surprised that, in spite of the important amount of French music of the period, we have next to zero surviving lutes. It makes me think that, right after the lute vague expired in France, all lutes and theorbos went to the waste bin. A shame. Nonetheless Julian Stryjak has pointed out how similar the outline is to the famous Mouton painting by FranAS:ois de Troy in Paris and indeed he has built nice copies. The Allard is indeed interesting in spite of its later conversion to a mandora because it may have the original soundboard (and barring?) so I would love to make a drawing when I next visit Brussels. However no plans to do so as yet! X-rays which would be of the greatest interest may be more difficult in these days of shortage of money.
