I wondered whether anyone uses a light coat of shellac (not authentic I know) before attempting surface carving on a lute rose, to hold it together a bit more. I find particularly when I cut the "tram lines" across the grain that bits of wood come out when they shouldn't. Perhaps shellac though would make the surface to hard to carve...
