Funny you should mention it! My first instrument built from scratch was a vihuela based on GAL's "Plan #36 1816 Martinez Salon Guitar". One of these days I'll actually build a guitar from that plan ; )

Rag paper, btw, was the only paper available at the time. Wood pulp paper didn't become available until the 19th century, I think. Also btw, I've been looking at the GAL plans for a 19th century Martin parlor guitar. The construction is rather similar to early music instruments. Very light construction.
