Lute braces can be made from soundboard off-cuts, resulting in grain
parallel to the soundboard. Perhaps this was simply the practice in
olden times and the resulting sound is what we know and love so the
   practice continues.

        Hi Paul
The way you want to make the braces is the way you do it on an
     Oud
        (arabic and turkish oud)
you will get an oud sound, don't know how to say it in english,
     oud
        sound...
See in you tube, the oud is very simmilar to the lute, (even lute
        makers don't think so)
it is not wrong.... it is simple... you will get an oudish lute
     sound

I apologize if this topic has been exhausted in the past, but I
     have
a question about grain orientation in lute bracing. It seems
counterintuitive to have the brace grain running parallel to
     the
top. I know the usual argument is that it's always been done
     that
way, so there must be a reason for it, and we have to keep
     doing it
that way, but has anyone made a lute with the grain running
perpendicular to the top, as in a guitar? If so, how did it
     affect
the tone of the lute? Thanks in advance for any information.
