Probably a bad day to address that question to a Californian.

But does it sound like an early seventeenth-century Scot's view of what
gypsies sounded like?

Paul O'Dette tells a story about playing the piece in a concert in Scotland
and having an elderly Scot come up after the concert and tell him that
"those chorrrrrrds" (Paul does a pretty good brogue) reminded of something
particularly Scottish out on the heath; I forget what, exactly, so maybe
someone else who's heard the story and isn't as senile as I am can finish
it.
