Hello! I would like to bring the following recording to your attention: Lachrimae - John Dowland Rolf Lislvand, lute Randi Steine, mezzo-soprano The Norwegian Baroque Orchestra Linn Records CKD194 Rolf performs the seven passionate pavans with a full baroque orchestra, complete with violins, viols and recorders. He also plays them faster and more dancelike then I am have heared them before. It would be very interesting to hear what you others think about it! I wonder if it is possible to tell whether or not these pieces actually were performed this way in the 17th century? On the CD Rolf uses an ordinary lute, but when I heard him do this programme live he used a theorbo. Do we know if Dowland ever played theorbo? Randi Steine proves that women should not sing Dowland.
