I doubt that it was a pipa - they have a really distinctive shape, curved back, and 4 silk strings. I've seen all of the M.A.S.H. episodes several times through. I have a vague image in my mind of something that reminded me of a mandora. I can't really remember though. I may just be free-associating. : ) Let us know if you find out!
